1/7. God tests Abraham

Abraham was 100 years old.

Sarah was 90 years old.

Multiple times God had promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations.  But Abraham had no child!

Genesis 12:1-4    Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee:  And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:  And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.   So Abram departed, as the Lord had spoken unto him;  and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

***

Between the age of 75-years and 100-years there was no child from wife Sarah.  Yet the promises from God kept coming through the years and it was the same promise concerning great nations coming from Abraham.

Genesis 13:12-16    Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.  But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.

And the Lord said unto Abram
, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:  For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

But there was no seed, for there was no child.

17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

Genesis 15:1-6    After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.
6 And he believed in the Lord; and HE counted it to him for righteousness.

Genesis 15:18  In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

But there was no child, no seed.

***

Genesis 16:1-2   Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

In those days, men had multiple wives and concubines.  But women did not have multiple husbands unless the first husband had died.  God put a difference between men and women.

3  And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

10-years had passed and Sarah had no child.

4 And he (Abraham) went in unto Hagar, and she conceived:

The child Abraham had with Hagar was called Ishmael.

Genesis 16:16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

Abraham is now 86-years old.

***

Genesis 17:1-8    And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before ME, and be thou perfect. And I will make MY covenant between ME and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for ME, behold, MY covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

And I will establish my covenant between ME and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

God establishes circumcision with Abraham.

Genesis 17:15-22    And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

But MY covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

***

God has appeared four-times to Abraham to tell Abraham that HE will make Abraham a father of many nations.  God has now told Abraham the "promised" child will come through Sarah.

Ishmael is the child born of the flesh of man.

But Isaac is a child which is born of the Holy Spirit of God by the promise of God.  And through this promised child, Isaac, will come the people of God.

Romans 9:7-8   Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

By our own will we can try to join the church.  We can go forward and be baptized and still not be born of the Spirit of God by the will of God.

9-23
For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son. And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;  (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)  It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.  As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

For HE saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew MY power in thee, and that MY name might be declared throughout all the earth.

Therefore hath HE mercy on whom HE will have mercy, and whom HE will HE hardeneth.

Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth HE yet find fault? For who hath resisted HIS will?

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

What if God, willing to shew HIS wrath, and to make HIS power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

And that HE might make known the riches of HIS glory on the vessels of mercy, which HE had afore prepared unto glory,

Acts 2:47  ...  And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

***

God sends HIS three angels to Abraham to tell him and Sarah of the coming child of the promise after they have waited 25-years.

Genesis 18:1-2     And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

They ate and drank with Abraham.

(This is symbolic of eating and drinking the Word of God with those people who are of God.)

Then they spoke:

Genesis 18:9-16    ... Where is Sarah thy wife?
And he said, Behold, in the tent.
And he (the angel) said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.

And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.  Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?

And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?

Is any thing too hard for the Lord?

At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid.

And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.

God is a God of truth and HE will not allow HIS people to dwell in lies.

And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

***
Twenty-five years passed between the promise and the fulfillment of the promise.
Hebrews 11:11-12   Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged HIM faithful who had promised.
Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

***

Abraham had to wait for 25-years before seeing the promise of God to him.
Then God fulfilled the promise and the promised child, Isaac was born.
Genesis 21:1-5    And the Lord visited Sarah as HE had said, and the Lord did unto Sarah as HE had spoken.  For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.
And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.

And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.

***

The son of the bondwoman is cast out.

Genesis 21:8-10    And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.

And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.

Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

Those born of the will of man will not dwell with those born of the Spirit of God.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.  (I Corinthians 2:14)

Genesis 21:11-12   And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.

And God said unto Abraham,
Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

***

After that there was another test.

Genesis 22:1-14  And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

It took 3 days travel to get to the area where Abraham was to sacrifice his son Isaac.

Abraham had 3 days to think about that which he was going to do.

5-10  And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

How could Abraham do this?

Isaac was the fulfillment of a 25-year promise of God.

Sarah has also waited all those years for this son to be born of herself.

Now the son, Isaac, is to be killed by his father, Abraham.

But Abraham saw something invisible which enabled him to kill Isaac.

Hebrews 11:17-19    By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:  Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

So Abraham is set to kill Isaac.

Genesis 22:11-12
And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

And HE said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from ME

15-18   And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,  And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:  That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;  And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed MY voice.

***.

There are many tests for us in life which show whether or not we love the Word of God more than all other people or things, and whether we will obey that which God tells us to do even when that word seems to bring us harm or loss.

Loving the Word from God is the key thing.

When we really love that word from God, we show that we trust God above ourselves or any other human or thing.

I have often had people say to me:

*  You can't do this.

*  I don't see how you can do this.

With me, it was always that I believed it was God who had given me those instructions, so since I believed it was God speaking to me, there was no other choice to make.

If we believe God has said something to us, we simply do that which is appropriate to the instructions given in that Word.
