Book description:

In the time of the judges of Israel, God turned the children of Israel over to various nations because of their disobedience.  Then when they cried out to God, HE would raise up a judge to deliver them from their bondage.

Psalm 107:4-7    They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.

Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and HE delivered them out of their distresses.

And HE led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

***

Many times they disobeyed God and they went into bondage as a result of disobedience to God.

Judges 2:11-19   And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the Lord to anger.  And they forsook the Lord, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and HE delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies.

Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

Nevertheless the Lord raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.

And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the Lord; but they did not so.

And when the Lord raised them up judges, then the Lord was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the Lord because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.

***

Many times God delivered them through a judge HE raised up.

Some of the more recognized judges of those days are:  Deborah, Gideon, and Samson

Samson?

We think of judges as men or women presiding over a court of law.

But in the days of the Old Testament, God's judges were often men or women who fought against the enemy.  Samson was used by God for the purpose of judging the Philistines and rendering to them that which they earned for themselves by evil works.

In the end, Samson was taken captive by the Philistines who put out his two eyes.  They were making sport of Samson and he was standing between two pillars which held up the arena.  He prayed to God:  O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.  (Judges 16:28)  God answered Samson's prayer and returned HIS great strength to Samson and he pushed against the two pillars which held up the arena and the building fell in on everyone, killing Samson with the Philistines.  So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.  (Judges 16:30)

And the judgment rendered by Samson against the Philistines was of God ... "for the Lord ... sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion  over Israel."  (Judges 14:4)

***

Gideon was used by God as a judge to deliver the children of Israel from the Midianites.  The children of Israel sinned against God so HE turned them into bondage for seven years.

Judges 6:6   And Israel was greatly improverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

***

Deborah, a judge, led the army of God through the commander Barak Also she sat under the palm tree of Deborah and the people of the children of Israel came to her for her to judge issues.  (Judges 4:4-5)  This is more like the judges we see today in courts of law.

There are many exciting and profitable stories in reading of the various judges.
